Her baptism is on FamilySearch with surname listed as Hinmam. For some reason, the software doesn't consider that a close match to Hinman, so it took a while to find her!

Alice Hinmam baptised 26 Apr 1785 Ashwell, Rutland, parents John and Alice.

John Hinman married Alice Jackson 19 Jun 1783 Ashwell.
Other children: Elizabeth 12 Oct 1783, John 7 Jan 1786, Thomas 20 Jan 1788, and William 3 Jan 1791.

Alice Hinman buried 24 Nov 1830 (presumably your Alice's mother, but there is no age at burial listed on FamilySearch).

And taking it back another generation - John Hinman baptised 27 May 1755 Ashwell, parents John and Elizabeth. John Hinman married Elizabeth Woodcock Sep 1754 Ashwell.

Oh can anyone tell me whats a Clergyman without the care of souls ????
and would I find any info re clergy in Rutland, this is John b abt 1779 so assuming this could be the John child of John and Alice baptised 1786

kiterunner 30-05-11 11:14

A clergyman without the care of souls presumably means that he wasn't in charge of a parish.

kiterunner 30-05-11 11:17

There is a C of E clergy database you can search:
http://www.theclergydatabase.org.uk/...arch/index.jsp

There is one John Hinman listed on there, BA from Clare Hall, Cambridge, ordained as a deacon 1801 and as a priest 1803. Appointed as curate of Market Overton 1801 and as curate of Cottesmore 1803. I'll see if I can find him in Crockford's as there might be more information.

kiterunner 30-05-11 11:18

Oops, Crockford's only started in 1858, sorry.

kiterunner 30-05-11 11:21

But the 1841 census has a John Hinman age 50 living in Ashwell, occupation Baker, born in county, and in 1851 he is still in Ashwell, age 66, farmer 30 acres, born Rutland Ashwell, so I would think he is more likely to be the John you're looking for, isn't he?
