Margaret, this one rang a few bells with me too!

Was she on the 1911 census or do you think she had died by then?

lozaras 17-04-10 10:29

Yes - this is the one !!

He is on the 1901 - RG13 2054 folio 31 p as 'Married' So she's probably somewhere.

I haven't got him on the 1911 but he didn't die until 1922

I don't know when she died :(

Merry 19-04-10 08:26

In 1911 John Horwell has Elizabeth b Bigbury with him, but she is only 54. Presumably seeing the actual page would help with this as she should say how long she and John have been married.

Merry 19-04-10 08:28

Oh lol If I put in 1866 as the marriage year for the 1911 (plus or minus a couple) she still comes up, so she's admitting to being married at age 9 or 10!! Maybe her age has been mistranscribed?

Merry 19-04-10 08:32

If John died in Newton Abbot district then I'd go for this possible:

Deaths Mar 1927
Horwell Elizabeth 77 Newton A. 5b 185

If you haven't got his death cert then you could do so to see if Elizabeth registered the death.

The image for the 1911 census shows:

John Horwell 65 Head Farm labourer
Elizabeth Horwell 64 Wife
Mary Horwell Daughter 43 Single
Emily Gross Daugther 29 Married Wife of Tin miner
Bertha Horwell Daughter 23 Single Deformed from birth

It says they have been married for 44 years with 7 children, 6 of whom are still alive.

Poor Bertha.

Merry 19-04-10 09:28

That's a better age for Elizabeth Horwell!

Poor Bertha, as you say. I see in 1911 it says 'at school' for her occ and nothing in the end column. I wonder if this is her death?

Name: Bertha P Horwell
Death Registration Month/Year: 1935
Age at death (estimated): 48
Registration district: Newton Abbot
Inferred County: Devonshire
Volume: 5b
Page: 173

though she didn't have a middle initial at birth. I don't see a marriage of a Horwell to a Bertha P anything, nor a marriage for a Bertha Horwell to someone else.

I have submitted a correction for Elizabeth Horwell's age on the 1911 census so hopefully it will show up correctly in the transcription before long!:)
