One little clue is that one of the witnesses at his marriage was Mary Ann Stanbury.

Yes, I tried to track her down once...from memory, there was a Mary Ann Stanbury age 14 in the Bethnal Green workhouse in the 1841 census (possible sister?), but the workhouse records from that time haven't survived so I haven't managed to prove a link.

Family story is he had a brother who was an instrument maker of some kind but I have no idea if that's true.

I've added in some updates in the original post. I'm pretty sure the Mary Ann Stanbury mentioned by Kiterunner was Richard's sister, and that she's also the Mary Ann who was in the workhouse in 1841.
