Default Unknown Grandfather may save my mum

Hello All,
I am hoping someone here might be able to help me or point me in the right direction. I am a kiwi living in the US. My mother is here with me on a humanitarian visa (health issues). That visa is now being rejected due to a change in policy from the Trump government. My only hope of getting her to stay is if I am a citizen. That’s where you come in. My dad was born in Sydney, Australia (1955) to an unknown father (Mother was Ellen Margaret Keough) but rumor has it he is American. I took a DNA test and there are definitely some links but I just don’t understand how to figure out all the links etc.
Can someone help me?
Thanks,
Yasmin

Welcome to the forum, Yasmin. Can you please confirm that your Dad's mother is no longer living or has consented to you posting her name up, please, otherwise we will have to remove her name as our forum rules don't allow posting details of living people without their consent.

A DNA test will not show whether your grandfather was American or not, unless we / you can actually figure out from the DNA test exactly who he was.

Thanks, Yasmin. Which site did you do your DNA test with?

And without posting any actual names, how many cM's does Ancestry or FTDNA say you share with the closest relative who you believe could be related to you on the unknown grandfather's side? (i.e. you don't see a connection to them on your mother's side or Ellen Keogh's side.)

Is that on Ancestry or FTDNA, please, Yasmin?

If I understand you correctly, you're saying you suspect this person's (the DNA match's) uncle is your grandfather? Which would make the 110 cM DNA match your first cousin once removed, but Ancestry says for 110 cM, less than 1 percent chance of that relationship. Much more likely that the relationship is more distant.
