Sad tale of Joseph Jordon Clark

Here's a sad little story I found on a grave at Shurdington church in Gloucestershire:



It reads:

IN MEMORY
of JOSEPH JORDAN CLARK
(Son of William and Hannah Clark
Of the Parifh of Badgeworth (Purgeter)
Who departed this Life the 12 of October 1825
Aged 13 Years.
Tread softly pafinger for doth lye here
We hope an Angel in a brighter sphere
The trampling of an horse did give me my death wound
My father fou[n]d me moaning bleeding on the ground
My mother did bewail me in the jaws of death
Within nine hours to God I did refign my breath
{ A fudden change I in a moment fell }
{ I had not time to bid my fr[i]nds farewell }
{ A fudden change may happen unto all }
{ My lots to day to morrow thine may fall }

That is a sad tale indeed Sabrina............

In the days when horses were a common method of transport as well as work animals, such things weren't as rare as they are now.

In 1900 my great-aunt Josephine was knocked over by a runaway horse and after being unconscious a few hours, died. That was in Gloucestershire too, in Rendcomb. It was 5 days after her 12th birthday.

What a sad tombstone, you can imagine the grief of his parents at his sudden death.

In 1900 my great-aunt Josephine was knocked over by a runaway horse...

That was sad too, Nell.

I know accidents were common then, but it is unusual to see it on a gravestone. They must have been so distraught at their loss.

Come to think of it, I have a few seen off by horses too...young Alfred Trafford, kicked in the head by a horse.

George Holden,eldest son, spoilt brat, dandy about town, driving a horse and carriage containing a Mrs Somebody or other and a woman (pmsl), took the corner a bit too sharp and collided with a post, throwing Mrs Doings out onto her head, from which she bled profusely and was carried into a nearby hotel, where she died.

The hotel had recently been refurbished to the highest manner and degree by Messrs Doodah and sons, who will welcome any commissions.....

I had someone who was thrown from his cart, hit his head on a rock, never regained consciousness and died shortly after. The horse apparently kept going and thatwas how they discovered him. He was also well known enough to have the whole event recounted in the local paper.

Having been trodden on by a horse and thrown off one, at separate times, I can say it bl**dy hurts.

Although all these incidents must have been heartbreaking for the families, it makes for interesting research.
