There is a Jane Newton death in Wycombe district (the one for Princes Risborough) in Jul-Sep 1862 and then a possible marriage in the same district in Apr-Jun 1866 between William Newton and Mary Ray. I'll see if I can find a matching Mary in previous censuses ...

Ooh yes indeed, on the 1861 there is Mary Ray age 76, lace maker, born Oxon Blackthorne, wife of Edmund Ray, and they are living at Culverton, Princes Risborough. And there is an Edmund Ray death Oct-Dec 1861 Wycombe district.

Possible marriage for Edmund and Mary on the IGI, taken from Oxfordshire Marriage Transcripts:

Edmund Ray married Mary Rayson 1817 Ambrosden, Oxford. Ambrosden isn't far from Blackthorn.

Well. I am gobsmacked! Thank you very much. I shall go and look at the 1871 census. I might have seen a William with a Mary in 1871 before now but thought no he is not mine

It never occurred to me that he might have married again after Jane had died - she died 25 August 1862 in Princes Risborough, at 69 years of age.

And Mary must have been in her seventies when they got married!

Indeed!!
Thinking back, I am not sure that I had searched much online for my Mum's Newton ancestral family in the census. I am almost sure that I had printouts of William and family from the census (other than 1841 and pre 1841) when we used to go to the (late lamented) Family Records Office in London.
Well, three marriages. Wish Mum was here to tell her :-)

I shall check the parish registers to make sure :-)

Thank you very much again.

They might have married at the register office, both being widowed.
