Name - "official" name and what they were known as

Born about 1766, not in Westminster according to the 1841 census Was Westminster a county? I've always assumed it was, but I'm not sure

Married Mary Ann Hare at St George's Hanover Square 18 Jan 1815. She was about 23 years younger than him. They went on to have 9 children, the youngest born when James was in his sixties.

The county in 1841 is Middlesex (ie London) - Westminster was a district, now a borough.

I see it doesn't state bachelor or widower on the marriage entry. I should think it is likely he was married before, though?

Ah, thanks, Asa. Westminster and the City of London always confuse me for some reason.

Kite, I've not managed to find an earlier marriage for James, but it does seem unusual to marry for the first time at nearly 50.

I've discovered a marriage licence for James and Mary Ann which states that, as suspected, he was a widower.
