Sorry Merry - I know think Beatrice was only my father's adoptive mother - I'll PM you the reasons why I think John Silas could have been my grandfather.

Oh dear, now I am more awake I realise John's first wife's middle name was Lucy and I saw records for Lily and thought it was the same person.

So, they went out there quite a few times compared with how many times they came back! I don't think we can make anything of that as the records are not complete.

The Kenyan Gazette says Emma Lucie Rathbone died 16th Sept 1949 at Nairobi.

There's loads of stuff on Google books if you search Rathbone Kenya.

I'm not sure if you found the year of death -

It appears to be 1963, aged 85.

5th one down:

Have just registered with the site. When I click on the link I get a message saying

"This is a record for JOHN SYLVANUS RATHBONE (1965).
Order the document now, and we'll notify you by email once your document is ready.

Please note that this order may take up to 10 days to complete.
If you place this order now, you can expect a ready notification from 29-Jul-2011."

It must be his death cert - It appears to cost £4.87 in sterling - So that seems worth doing.

Thanks again Merry

I have seen another site with his year of death as 1965.

Of course you may end up with a second copy of his obit (with date?) and no death cert.
