So... my father is there once (twice on FMP)
One aunt correctly visible, one aunt incorrectly visible (as FMP)
Mum is still blocked, incorrectly.
Do I conclude that the redacting is external?

Yes, I reckon that FMP have supplied the images to ancestry with the redactions already made, and ancestry have made their index from the redacted images.

Not according to Ancestry the images are from TNA, but no doubt those images are from FMP anyway!

About 1939 England and Wales Register

Redactions

Images have been redacted to protect the privacy of those still alive and we will be annually adding records for those with birth dates over 100 years or if a record of the death has been reported to The National Archives. Images will also be updated to reflect the opening of the record. All indexes have been created from redacted images as provided by The National Archives and as such, some indexes may not include all information as originally recorded, where it is obscured from view.

But having said that, I'm looking at a household with two open records and two closed, where FMP says there are 4 open and two closed. I doubt that ancestry went through the same process of matching up partial transcriptons and closing records as FMP did, so I am guessing that it has taken them a while to index the images supplied by FMP and that their images are out of date compared to FMP, i.e. don't show the records which have been opened by FMP since they were supplied.

Sorry, we were posting at the same time, Jay. Yes, I would think the redacted images supplied by TNA came from FMP.

I've just seen on Facebook that ancestry are giving free access to the 1939 Register until Sunday 13th May.

Ooh, I think I've found my grandfather's cousin who I never found on FMP.
edit - and now I have found her on the 1911 census with the person she was with in 1939, who turns out to be her sister-in-law's brother, so definitely the right people.

Oh wow......I always wanted to know where my Dad went to when he was orphaned, family always said he went to live in a big house but I could never find this info. Some kind soul had a look on the 1939 and said it looked like he was with his aunt in Warwickshire but the record was closed..........I've just found him on the link provided!!! Happy Days

That's good news Maggie. My Grandma's record has been opened on ancestry. It probably is on FMP but I haven't checked.

I still can't find my great grandmother though. Her husband is on the register but she is not with him. Her only child was married a few months later and I can't believe she missed the wedding and we can't see her on the only group wedding photo.
