His widow Elizabeth and son Alfred applied for administration 7 years after his death, which was why I didn't think it was the same William Alexander who died in 1821!

I have a mystery regarding this William Alexander.

A couple of years ago my daughter made contact with a descendant of a William Alexander who was "bridewell keeper" at Marlborough. He claimed common ancestry with us, but we couldn't make the link.

his William married at least 3 times.

William Alexander, wdr, and Martha Titcomb sp
20 Sep 1801
Marlborough St Peter's

Day: 19 Month: Sep Year: 1801
Groom Forenames: William
Groom Surname: ALEXANDER

Groom's parish: Marlborough St Peter
Groom's county: Wiltshire,England Groom's condition:
Groom's occupation: bridewell keeper
Groom's age: Groom's notes:
Bride Forenames: Martha
Bride Surname: TITCOMB
Bride's parish: Marlborough St Peter Bride's county: Wiltshire,England Bride's condition: sp Bride's age: Bride's notes: Place of Marriage:
Bondsman 1: SILK William, tailor,Marlborough St Peter Bondsman 2: Jurisdiction: The Bishop of Salisbury in Wiltshire and Berkshire

From these two entries we can see that William was a widower and a bridewell keeper.

Martha died in 1806.

Then:
there is a submitted entry for William Alexander marrying Elizabeth Box in Marlborough in 1807.

One of the children's baptisms confirms this:
Day: 25 Month: Dec Year: 1813
Forenames: Eliza Box
Surname: ALEXANDER
Fathers forenames: William
keeper of County Bridewell
Mothers forenames: Elizabeth late BOX

Place: Marlborough
Description: SS Peter & Paul

Now, looking more closely at my proven family, they were in Marlborough from c. 1794.
My William's wife, Ann, maiden name Clements, was buried as follows:

First name(s): Ann
Last name: ALEXANDER
Date of burial: 20 Mar 1801
Age at death: Calculated year of birth: Not known
Place of burial: Avebury
Dedication: St James
County: Wiltshire

Both she and William came from Avebury.

I'm hoping I can solve this mystery - this family might be bigger than I thougt!

Later in 1801 the above William Alexander, a widower, married Martha Titcomb.

Are they one and the same person??

I have been googling like mad but can't find anything. I have e-mailed the Wiltshire History Centre and I have an initial reply. They can do a search for me, but we plan to visit in the autumn.

I have had another reply from the very helpful lady at the Archives:

"It is very feasible that William had married three times. Avebury is the not far from Marlborough

William son of William & Ann Alexander was baptised on 25 July 1786 in Avebury
I didn't have this child.

William Alexander of Berwick Basset, schoolmaster married Ann Clements of this parish on 18 May 1786 in Avebury
I didn't know that William was a schoolmaster! His first children were born in Berwick Bassett.

Ann Alexander was buried on 20 March 1801

William Alexander married Martha Titcombe on 20 September 1801in St Peter’s Marlborough

Martha Alexander was buried on 4 April 1806 in St Mary’s Marlborough

William Alexander married Elizabeth Box on 18 May 1807 in St Peter’s Marlborough

I hope this helps."

It's looking promising, but I still need some more links.

If he signed his name on the marriages, you could compare the signatures to see if they match, though sometimes it's hard to be sure.

Also you could look at the Index to Death Duty Registers to see if there is an entry for him on there just in case he left a will or there was an admon despite it not being on the Wiltshire Archives site.

No joy with the death duty registers, unfortunately. I think I have looked before.

I shall have to plan my trip down to Wiltshire, I can see.

Thanks for the suggestions, Kate.

God bless Joseph Clements, the cousin of Ann Clements who married William Alexander.

I hadn't got around to transcribing his long will (3,500 words) but made a start today, then I got hooked. He married twice (Hannah Eyles and Patience Field) but had no children.

His will provides for family members, servants, friends etc. It is very detailed.
Half-way through there is this:

"I Give and Bequeath unto the two Eldest Daughters of William Alexander of
Marlborough in the County of Wilts Gaoler begotten by him on the body of
Ann Clements (his first Wife) the Daughter of Robert Clements of Avebury
aforesaid"

I know that William Alexander the Gaoler married Martha Titcombe in 1801 and after her death he married Eliza or Elizabeth Box in 1807.

However, previously I had a quandry as William Alexander was buried in 1821 at Avebury.

However, the William Alexander the gaoler died intestate and the documents are for 1828. But now they are online I see there is a date of death of 14th July 1821 on the second page! So what a result.

Now I have to look at his second and third marriages and any children born. I know there was an Alfred, Eliza Box, Frederick and Montague.
