Not sure if I'm supposed to put all this up, so please take the bits down I should have here...

What I want to know is mostly the bit in red......it reads to me as though Jane Addison was the wife of Hugh Addison (which would make her possibly Jane Chippindall) but is now the wife of this John Askew.

Have I got this completely round the wrong way???

It looks to me as though they are two different Janes, Libby.

No no no, there are two Janes - his wife Jane who is getting ten quid and this other Jane, wife of Hugh Addison, who only gets her twenty quid if she plays nicely with Jane Askew.

In fact, Jane Addison actually gets nothing, but she is let off repaying the £20 she owes the estate - as long as she is nice to Jane Askew. If she isn't, she has to repay the estate the £20 she has borrowed/owes or whatever the arrangement was, maybe a lifetime loan without interest?
