Is it possible that George married without permission of the regiment? I can't remeber whether such marriages were valid or not. If she had no children from the marriage, it might have been dissolved, hence her reverting to her former name.

That could very well be true. By 1851 she would have been around 40 & not so likely to have more children. As far as I can tell, she only had 2 during her 16 year marriage to her first husband, so she perhaps wasn't one of the more fertile women of that time!
By googling I think I've found that the Coldstream Guards were at St George's barracks, which is the same regiment as Elizabeth's first husband.

Did anyone manage to find George earlier than 1851? I suppose he is unlikely to have been with his parents in 1841 anyway, particularly if he had already joined the army.

Have you looked at the George Brewster army papers yet to see if they say anything about his family?

Please Miss, I have!

They are much to early to give family details. He signs his name, so that's something to compare. He's a labourer, in the Coldstream Guards, joined 1835, was in Quebec for 4 years and was discharged after 19 yrs service, intending to settle back in Lincolnshire.

It sounds a bit as if he knew Elizabeth's first husband, doesn't it?

Thanks Pheonix, I'd not been able to view them as I don't have a sub & you don't seem to be able to view them with pay as you go.
It certainly does sound like he would have known Samuel & surely it is too much of a coincidence for him not to be the one who married Elizabeth in 1850, but then why is he listed as single in 1851 & where are Elizabeth & her daughter? It is all very interesting!

You can view army papers on FMP with pay as you go - I know because I did it with several of my rellies.

When I looked at subscriptions, I was sure that there wasn't an option for pay as you go for the military records, I will have to look again.

When you search the military section, it shows you the cost in credits of viewing army papers. 5-30 credits.

I did see that, it said 30 credits I was hoping that it would be covered in the free 14 day trial, but sadly not.
