Default Missing Census Pieces and other Anomalies

The following information was put together in 2005. Where I have found corrections have been made in the following years I have added notes rather than deleting the original information so we can be reminded of the types of errors that can and do occur in census transcriptions over large numbers of records.

This is by no means a complete list - if you discover anything you would like me to add, or you discover something on this list has been corrected please pm me or add a post to this thread.

Missing in 1881?

In the 1881 census there are a lot of spelling mistakes in the transcribed names of Civil Parishes on Ancestry.

E.g. If you look for people living at Hammersmith, you will find.......NONE at all!
However, if you change the spelling of Hammersmith to HaRmmersmith you will find 72,888 people! <<<<< now corrected

Here's the list of those I've noticed so far:

Budewell (Bridewell) 527
Ciucolus Seur (Lincolns Inn lol) 25
Harmmersmith (Hammersmith) 72,888 <<<<<< corrected
Islinston (Islington) 6,215
Kentington (Kensington) 1,290
Linchouse (Limehouse) 20,567 <<<<<<<<<<<<corrected
Marlebone (Marylebone) 22,126
St George Hannover Square (Hanover) 26,720
St George in the Earl (East) 1,244
St Lakes (St Lukes) 7,816
St Mary Bolington (Islington) 1,394
St Pancreas (lol!! Pancras) 843
St Martin Ventry (Vintry) 554
White Chapel (should be one word!) 992
Noddington (Paddington) 1,114

Many of the Civil Parishes that have a saints name have more than one set of records - one for singular and the other plural, such as St George Hanover Square as well as St Georges Hanover Square.
The first 1,000+ records for HaRmmersmith (now corrected to Hammersmith) on Ancestry appear to be untranscribed (i.e. no names, ages, or places of birth transcribed) but on viewing a few of the pages, it's NOT because they were illegible!
In 1881 there is a county called Miscellaneous. This contains 1,245 peoples' records.
There are Vessels where the ship name wasn't filled in, or that page is missing/illegible and also many pages from numerous Workhouses and other intututions around the country where the name of the institution is not recorded!
There are 3,842,710 individuals recorded in the County of London. Of these roughly 35,000 people have no name transcribed at all (some, but nowhere near all, are illegible pages or those where one folio has partly covered the following one(s) when being filmed).
Another 900+ have first name but no surname.
There are 595 people recorded in 1881 as living in the Civil Parish of St Martin Orgur - the parish name on the census folios is St Dionis Backchurch.
About 300 or so people who live in the civil parish of St Andrew by the Wardrobe are indexed as living in the civil parish of St Benet, St Peter and St Paul, which is actually next door!

Oh, haha!

I remember being very surprised to read someone's funny post and recognising my own words about my own children!

I suppose it's a sort of compliment really.

758 - Part of Egham, sub to Windsor District, Surrey

Does this include Pyrford? I believe some records there were lost due to flooding, and I'm missing one or two 1861s from there.

In 1861 Pyrford seems to be in the Registration district Chertsey (sub-registration district also Chertsey), according to ancestry, but they are sometimes wrong!

EDIT: I've just looked on UKBMD and they say Pyrford was in Chertsey district 1837-1934.
