Default Help with John William Fearn

Just received the marriage cert for son in law's great grandparents.

Feb 18th 1915 at All Saints church, Burton by licence.

John William Fearn aged 22 a soldier . No regiment listed. His residence at the time of marriage was Saffron Walden.

Florence Emily Turner aged 19 of 179 Branstone Rd, Burton.

Witnessed by Ernest Barrett and Eva Taylor. I have no idea who those two are.

I have done well with Florence's side of the tree but can't get started on John's.

His father was also John William Fearn (deceased) a gardener.

John William did survive the war but I've had no luck in finding a army record for him. Is there anyway of finding which regiment was in Saffron Walden in 1915?

Any help would be appreciated.

if all else fails you could try the birth cert for their son, b later 1915 - a registrar might be more likely to ask for the service number than the vicar at All Saints church!

The North Staffs and South Staffs regiments - which would seem a logical choice - did train at Saffron Walden in 1915. They left for France in March 1915.

There are about 46 men named John Fearn (a few are John William of John W) who received medals in WW1 according to Ancestry's records. There is a John Wm Fearn in the 6th Bat N Staffs Reg listed. He would have gone to France in early March 1915. Perhaps they wanted to get married before he was posted overseas?

I would like him to be the one reg for birth in Burton district in 1893 and then the step-son of George Fountain in 1901. Have you investigated/eliminated this one? (the birth reg may not be for the same child, I don't know)

In 1911 there's a John William Fearn aged 16 (so slightly out) at 41 Clarence St Burton. He's a boarder but also in the household are Ernest Barrett and Eva Allard.

Eva Allard married John S Taylor in 1913

I haven't investigated anyone yet, marriage cert came this morning and I've been out.

I know off the top of my head that there is a John William Fearn military record online but it isn't him as he was born c 1880 and killed in action.

Hmmm, there are two births after 1911 for Fountain mmn Fearn, so if they are children of George and Betsy Fountain then she wasn't prev married.
