Default Am I doing something wrong?

I have may DNA on Ancestry and even made my tree public so others could access it.
I so far have 396 people who share DNA. I know quite a few, but have messaged a lot of the closer ones I don’t know who do not have a tree there and explained that Ancestry says we are related and I’d love to know how. I tell them they can access my tree.

Not one reply! Why do they bother putting no tree or a tree with just them on it and still not answer messages?

Have I missed something?

Yes, I m pretty sure you have missed something, Libby - those 396 people are almost certainly the closer matches, 20 cM's or higher, and if you click to "view all matches", you will find you have thousands more, even after the recent cull of small matches.

As for people with no tree, many of them will have done a DNA test just to see the "ethnicity estimate", and are not interested in doing family trees. I try to see them as a bonus, just extra matches we get from the ethnicity side of things, rather than a problem.

Also, I'm not sure the new messaging system is working completely properly yet, and even if it is, they may have set their settings so that they don't get an email to alert them to messages.

Sometimes you can figure out how they are related by looking at shared matches, or figure out who they are from their user name (e.g. if they have an unusual name you may be able to figure out their family tree from it, or if they have a "Segafan133" type username, Googling it might come up with info to tell you who they are.

I have the same problem Libby with people not replying. I've added my email address to my message so if they can't reply through ancestry if they haven't got a current sub they can still get in touch.

Son's dna has 374 close matches but of these:-

I have sorted the close matches into family groups where I can see they're connected and also their shared matches to that group.

However some of the matches I can't work out which family group they belong to nor have the shared matches provided a clue either.

There's others that have no shares matches at all.

Are they really matches.

Yes, they will still be matches even if they have no shared matches.

If you send someone a message on Ancestry and they don't have a sub, they can still reply to your message. They just can't send the first message to you if you haven't already sent one.

Thanks Kite didn't know that.

Perhaps will send message to those who I haven't a clue which family they belong to.

You can also tell whether they are mean or forgetful, by seeing when they last logged into Ancestry. And whether your message to them says it has been read.

I don't think it is always right when it says your message has been read, though, Phoenix.

I have no faith in the TIME in which it is purportedly read, but it usually changes to say it's been read when my correspondet has logged in.

I have some marked as read where the person hasn't logged in for months.

Thanks. Sounds like a fairly common problem.
