Default Marriage/maiden name woes

I have a couple in my tree but struggling with a mismatch between the mmn on their childrens births and the brides surname at marriage.

March 1845 marriages
Whitby 24, 561
Joseph Harforth to Margaret Brydon

The birth index for 1847-1870 brings up the children who appear in the census but the mmn has several variant spellings; Bridon/Briden/Bryden as well as Dridon/Dryden.

Margaret died in 1915, age through census is fairly consistent suggesting a birth about 1828-1830 and born Marske, Yorks. There is an 1841 in the surname of Bridon but I can't find a baptism in any Bridon/Dridon variant.

I don't get it, Glen - what is the mismatch between the bride's surname and the MMN, please?

There is a tree on Ancestry which has Margaret as the daughter of an Ann Brydon who was baptised 23 Feb 1806 at Marske. This is the 1841 census entry, I presume the one you mentioned, where Margaret is age 13, with Thomas Bridon age 75 and John age 9:

According to the Ancestry tree, Thomas was Ann's father and thus Margaret's grandfather.

On the 1851 census Thomas is John's grandfather, and Thomas's birthplace is Sunderland:

FMP has the baptism of a John Speding at Marske in 1831, parents Joseph Speding and Ann Brydon. Also an Ann Hill baptised 1828, parents John Hill and Ann Brydon. Can't see one for Margaret though.

I'm questioning myself as to whether I've got the right Margaret throughout. The 1841 and marriage are Bridon/Bryden, births of her children have variations on the Bridon name but also variations on the Dryden name.

HARFORTH, MARY JANE
mmn BRYDON
GRO Reference: 1847 D Quarter in WHITBY UNION Volume 24 Page 536

HARFORTH, WILLIAM
BRYDON
GRO Reference: 1850 D Quarter in WHITBY Volume 24 Page 593

HARFORTH, JOHN
mmn DRYDEN
GRO Reference: 1853 M Quarter in WHITBY Volume 09D Page 355

HARFORTH, JOHN
mmn DRYDON
GRO Reference: 1855 S Quarter in WHITBY Volume 09D Page 369

All the census returns match up for her with the kids but I couldn't see a baptism for her.

There are loads of mistranscriptions on the online GRO indexes, so I wouldn't worry too much about it saying Dryden. I suppose you would be best to get Joseph and Margaret's marriage cert.

I'm maybe being a bit pedantic but it's the main line on my half sister's tree and I'm trying to cross the t's before launching too deep into the certs. Duff certs come out of my pocket
