Default US Death Indexes?

I am trying to investigate, and trying to obtain a death certificate in the usa, my client has given me some information, but i can not find it, does the usa system not work like the uk, and list deaths all as one?

No, there are no cross-state bmd indexes for the USA.

Is the death one that might be on the US Social Security Death Index on Family Search?

I'm tempted to say that I would expect someone running a commercial operation to be aware of this sort of thing.
