Okay, I've found the article on Papers Past:
Otago Witness 3 Jul 1928
Mr George Henry Cox, of Enfield, who has been a resident of North Otago for a period of over half a century, passed away on June 24 at the age of 74 years. The deceased was born at Farindon, Berkshire, in 1853, and came to New Zealand in the barque Lutterworth, reaching Port Chalmers in 1869.

The Lutterworth was purchased for the New Zealand trade in 1872, so the date in that articles seems to be wrong:

There are some links to various NZ passenger lists on here but I don't know whether they will all still work:

Hmm, I found a passenger list for the Lutterworth on its voyage from London to Port Chalmers 1872-1873 but it says cabin Mr Davis, intermediate and steerage 103 unknown names.

Wow Kate, that's SUPERB!

Thank you so much.

At present, I have no idea when the article was written and sincerely hope my new contact in NZ finds something pertinent in her paperwork.

I understand that her late aunt was meticulous and checked everything, from every angle, as we all should.

Henry Cox, unless George Henry was lying about his birth for some reason, remains the main 'suspect', although the Henry I found in 1881 will need further attention.

Aha ... cross posted and have just seen your reply re the Lutterworth! BUM! No list.

Indeed it is.
It could be that this is the other one born the same year

The soldier seems to be Harry Cox who was born in 1857, MMN Westall. This is the 1901 census entry and he is Harry on the marriage to Georgina in 1890:

https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageview...ce&pId=9662373

Here are his army papers but the first page is very blurry (as are some of the later ones too):
https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageview...rce&pId=764094
Age 18 in Feb 1874 whereas your Henry would have been 20. (Well, Harry would be under 18 but more likely to add years on than subtract them I should think.) Occupation before joining up - plater and plasterer.

Yes, to confirm that the soldier is not your Henry, here is the page in his army papers giving parents' names as William and Jane:
