Default 1881 census Salford/Manchester

Are there areas missing from this census for Salford/Manchester?

I cannot find Sarah Ashby born 1857 in Hertfordshire and her son John born 1879 in Salford.

I've tried just putting first names and place of birth but no success.

Don't think she was married but an Edward ? has been mentioned as a possible father to the children born up to 1889.

1871 CENSUS
https://www.ancestry.co.uk/interacti...69/edit/record

1891 CENSUS

https://www.ancestry.co.uk/interacti...68/edit/record

place of birth for 1891 has changed to born on the high seas!! but all the other census's give her right birthplace.

I haven't found anything in 1881 but just wanted to check I'm looking at the right people.

Birth in 1879 mmn Sherman?

No marriage between Sarah Sherman and Mr Ashby?

1891 she says born 'on the high seas'?

1901 she says born Aldbury Buckinghamshire? Husband Frank Ashby has reappeared.

As the places of birth don't match what you said I may be looking at the wrong birth reg for John, but the other possible birth (in 1880) seemed to be for another couple's baby (Joseph and Mildred)

Ah, OK so Aldbury is in Herts, just the wrong county in 1901. OH Frank not Edward though...

So, was Frank an alias for Edward or a different person/relation?

I see from other trees that Frank's real surname was Norman (unconfirmed by me).

Is this where the name Edward came from?

Name: John Ashby
Gender: Male
Baptism Date: 8 Dec 1880
Baptism Place: Chapelry of St. Clement, Ordsall-in-Salford, Lancashire, England
Father: Edward Ashby
Mother: Sarah
FHL Film Number: 1786422
Reference ID: item 3 p 90

Sarah's maiden name was Ashby, her mother's maiden name was Sherman.

A daughter put Edward Ashby as her father's name on marriage certificate.

Frank Norman didn't come on the scene until 1897 and used her surname on 1901 census.

Yes forgot John's baptism had an Edward Ashby as his father but can't see a marriage of Ashby/Ashby.

Also the children have Sherman as mother's maiden name except for Frank Norman b1897.

So she used her own mother's maiden name instead of her own surname because she wasn't married! That's why I was confused at the 1871 census you posted because there were no Shermans on it!

None of which helps with the 1881 census!!

Ah, here they are:

Aside - coincidence that two John Ashbys were baptised on the same day in the same church by the same man. Definitely two different people though.

The baptism gives an address of 1 Skinner St. Edward is a labourer.
