Another Google books snippet, from "Glimpses of Ancient Hackney and Stoke Newington":
Again, another gravestone is to the memory of Thomas Bell, of this parish, a lieutenant in the Honourable Artillery Company, who died suddenly at the Armoury House, Finsbury-square, on the 23rd November, 1826, and who was, by command ...

London Gazette from 1830:
Take notice, that the Copartnership heretofore subsisting between the undersigned, Anna Maria Bell and Thomas Frederick Bell, of Cambridge-Heath, Hackney, in the County of Middlesex, Coal-Merchants, has been dissolved by mutual consent.

Presumably Thomas Frederick is a son? It looks likely that Thomas sr was a coal merchant too, don't you think?

Just realised Shona's post #39 on this thread about the baptisms of some of Thomas and Anna Maria's children in 1815 says "Thomas Bell, general merchant, of Well Street, and Anna Maria". So the Thomas Bell buried 30 Nov 1826 (post #71) must be the right one because his address on the burial is Well Street.

There seem to be a lot of Bell-Russell baptisms done 'in bulk'. Could that mean that Thomas and Anna Maria travelled around and baptised the children when they were back in London.

These are the births/baptisms that I've found so far:

Baptised at St Mary, Islington

- Elizabeth Clemenson Bell, born 2 April 1803, baptised 12 May 1803

Baptised at St John, Hackney

- Thomas Frederick Bell, born 26 May 1804, baptised 14 August 1804
- Charles Bell, born 21 Aug 1805, baptised 21 Dec 1805
- John Bell, born 4 Dec 1806, baptised 21 Dec 1808
- James Bell, 9 July 1808, baptised 21 Dec 1808
- Richard Bell, born 5 May 1810, baptised 5 April 1815
- Alfred Russell Bell, born 26 July 1811, baptised 5 April 1815
- Edward Bell, born ? 1812, baptised 5 April 1815
- Russell Bell, born 14 Jan 1815, baptised 5 April 1815
- Michael, born 23 Aug 1816, bapt 24 Sept 1820
- Mary Bell, 8 Aug 1818
- Maria Bell, 9 July 1820

One of the public trees on Ancestry also has Asa Bell, b 1813, and Cornelia Bell, b 1814.

Blimey Anna Maria had a lot of children in a short space of time even for those days

Julie

Getting back to the maternal line for Sancton do you think your friend will order the birth cert of Ayesha Bell to check the Maiden Surname?

oooh Cambridge Heath that is just around the corner from where I live.

1830 - seems a bit downmarket for them for living quarters even then to close to Bethnal Green (now Tower Hamlets borough) and Shoreditch (now borough of Hackney) its maybe the trading premises!

Or is there another family of Bells with Edward as father and engineer?
Just realised this is Edward's daughter Maria (so Sancton's older sister) her uncle Richard his wife Caroline and her other uncle Charles are witnesses.

... and this is her husbands probate who died at sea in 1888:-

... errrm his wife in Lewisham which might have a bearing on where someone else died - yes because this is where 'we' think Edward died

Here are Thomas Frederick Bell's Freedom of the City of London Papers from 1818.

http://search.ancestry.co.uk/Browse/...Jun+-+Oct.1253

Father is Thomas Bell, Wells St, merchant. The master is John Russell of Upper Pratt Place, Camden Town.
