Default Ancestry cannot process sample?

My friend and neighbour sent in a DNA sample a few weeks ago and he’s just got an email to say that they couldn’t process the sample and are sending a new kit. Frustrating yes. Any ideas why this happens and what are the usual reasons? He thinks he must have done it wrongly somehow.
I’ve told him he’s got to come to my house to do the new one so I can supervise.

There are some "tips for taking a successful saliva sample" on this page:

This happened to my daughter's father-in-law.
He is in his 80s and I think he struggled with the whole process.

Neighbour is a smoker so I’m wondering if that is the reason. Probably didn’t leave it long enough after his last cigarette.

I don't think smoking can affect your DNA or the quality of saliva, but maybe the amount of saliva he could produce. My Dad's first sample failed and they sent another which was successful. I was a bit unsure that it was okay when he did it the first time - there were a lot of bubbles and did it reach the line properly ? Was it the delay before I posted it - which was entirely my fault. I guess I will never know.

This happened to me as well. I followed the instructions, I don't smoke, but received the same message. The only thing I can think of is perhaps there wasn't enough actual saliva, but froth etc.
I probably overdid it this time lol.

You aren’t supposed to smoke, eat or drink for 30 minutes before the test.

I suppose depending on what you ate it could skew your ethnicity results.
