Default Ladywill Langston

I'm trying to sort out a tree for a cousin who knows little about her father's family.

Her grandmother was Ladywill Bell, nee Langston, born 1909-1911 (records vary), died 1995 in Texas.
Parents: Willie Langston and Sallie Vicks
Married: Ananias Bell in 1929
https://www.ancestry.co.uk/discovery...38397721:60901

Will and Sallie Langston in 1930 census: https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageview...ue&pId=1698613

Daughter Sallie Mae (wrong on census - has her 20 years old and married for 19 years if I have read that right).

Taking Sallie Mae back to 1920 and 1910 censuses:
https://www.ancestry.co.uk/discovery...147191735:7884
https://www.ancestry.co.uk/discovery...w/4536051:6061

Wiliam Langston is apparently married to a Fanny Johnson ........... places and ages the same. Fanny didn't die - her and Will are on 1940 census, though there is no 1930 census for Fanny, which suggest Sallie should be Fanny. So who is Sallie Vicks?

Where is Ladywill Langston in all this? I can't her on any census before she married. To confuse it further, she appears on her marriage as Ladywill Rice. https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bi...rhSource=61383

Totally zonked now. Can anyone help?

It's "age at first marriage", so she is 20 and she got married age 19.

Does your cousin know for sure that her grandmother had a sister called Sallie Mae? I'm wondering whether there are two different William Langstons, one from Georgia and one from Texas? (The one in the censuses that you linked was in Georgia.)

Anyway, this is Ladywill on the 1910 census, thanks to someone who has this linked to their tree:

https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageview...?pId=122025416

Robertson, Texas
Vick Julia Head age 58 born North Carolina
Sallie Daughter 20 born North Carolina
Luther Son 17 born Texas
Viola Granddaughter 12 born Texas
Francie Granddaughter 8 born Texas
Welborne Grandson 8 born Texas
Ladie Granddaughter 8 months born Texas.

The grandchildren all have United States for father's birthplace and North Carolina for mother's.

The date of the 1910 census was 15 Apr 1910, so the age of 8 months means Ladywill was probably born Aug 1909.

This is Julia and Sally in 1900. Sally is down as "son", born Aug 1889:

The household continues on the next image.

omg thanks for that, that's a brilliant find!

No, she knows almost nothing beyond a father's name and dates (Odie B Bell c1929-2000) and a grandmother's name. Odie and family have been relatively easy to find.

Is it safe to presume that William Langston was Ladywill's father, but probably not married to her mother?

I think this is Ladywill in 1920, in Robertson, Texas (not taken from anyone's tree):

https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageview...1&pId=93283516

Milne Charlie Head 39 born Texas, parents born Texas
Ellie wife 34 born North Carolina, parents born North Carolina
Elvin son 16 born Texas, father born Texas, mother born NC
Lucious son 14 born Texas, father born Texas, mother born NC
Charlie son 12 born Texas, father born Texas, mother born NC
Ladywill niece 10 born Texas, father born Texas, mother born NC
Elnoria niece 4 born Texas, father born Texas, mother born NC.

Yes! That definitely looks like her, wonderful!

This will make you laugh - I just asked cousin if she had any idea where her gran was born. She asked her very elderly mother who said that she was probably born in Salem ................. My cousin related this to me in complete seriousness, bless her.

I don't think we have enough information yet to be sure that her father was really called William Langston, but it does seem likely that her parents weren't married to each other.
