Thanks Kate. I have those entries on an old list from when OH did ls of visits to our 'local' CRO. I'll have another play now to see if I can get anywhere. It would be good to link that Dorothy in!

I first looked at trying to find anything on Robert the husband of Dorothy Hillier who should have died after Aug 1685.

I found a will for a Robert Hellier signed 30 Jul 1697 and proved 20 Nov 1697 and a burial 4 Aug 1697 at Osmington which all fit together, however it would appear to most likely be for a younger Robert than the one I was after (hopefully a son of the other Robert?)

This is the jist:

Robert Hellier of Osmington husbandman

Brother John Hellier one shilling
Brother Richard Hellier one shilling
Brother Thomas Hellier one shilling
Kinsman Nicholas Hellier (then a few words I can't make sense of, but is he saying this Nicholas is the son of his brother?) forty shillings
Rest of goods and chattels to:
Brother Nicholas Hellier
Sister Elizabeth Hellier
Sister Mary Hellier

So now I just need to find some baptisms!

Merry, I have ancestors from Osmington too and we visited the village in the summer. They were contemporary with your Helliers. The surname was Charles and some of them in later generations were smugglers and associated with the Smuggler's Inn on the coast at Osmington Mills, where we had a very good meal.

If you scroll down the left-hand side it mentions the notorious Emmanuel Charles.

I expect our ancestors knew each other well!

lol Thanks Elizabeth!

*almost related*

The daughter John and Susannah Hellier married Henry Buck. I have a lot of Bucks on my tree including several smugglers and many more revenue men and one who was both a smuggler and a revenue man, all descended from Henry!
