Emma/Emily/ ?Mary Spriggs/Devlin/Lumber again......Sorry
I’m still going round in circles with this woman and her family!! Here is a previous thread about her http://www.genealogistsforum.co.uk/f...hlight=spriggs
And then there is this one about her as well http://www.genealogistsforum.co.uk/f...hlight=spriggs These are my latest thoughts, any addition to them gratefully received 1901 census has Henry Lumber born about 1881 in Blackfriars as son of John J and Emma Lumber along with siblings.http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin...26pgplz0q3dpid I can find no birth record for Henry Lumber, there is a Henry Ernest Lumber 1881 Bedminster, but he seems to die in 1882 as Ernest Henry Lumber. So I don’t think that is him! His mother, Emma married Henry Devlin in 1879 in Southwark in Aug 1879, they married by licence, both of full age. Henry’s occupation is Baker. I can find no death for Henry Devlin. And no convincing ongoing records for him In 1881 census there is a Henry Devlin who is 10 months old, living in Southwark with his mother Mary, her husband isn’t present, and he is a steward at sea. She is born at Horsford?( Emma was born in Hertford!) He is born in Southwark. http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin...try&h=20347810 There is a birth registration for Henry James Devlin. Sept 1880 St Saviour, London. Which fits! I can find no further records for this Henry Devlin. Emma married John James Lumber in Jan 1891 as a widow, can’t find them in 1891 census! In 1911 census http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin...26pgplz0q3dpid It states that Emma and John Lumber have been married for 27 years, making the year of marriage 1884, 7 years before they actually married. What do you think about this 1881 census.... I know I really should get the birth cert, but money is tight at the mo. Is this Emma who is sometimes Emily, is she now sometimes Mary as well? Have we ever looked at these baptisms before?
London baptisms ancestry 21 May 1889 All Hallows Southwark / Walworth All Saints: Henry James, son of Henry and Emma Develin, 23 Stanhope Bdgs, no occupation shown Emily Weston, daughter of Henry and Emma Develin, 23 Stanhope Bdgs, no occupation shown Arthur John, son of John and Emma Lumber, 23 Stanhope Bdgs, Cart Tasker(?) Unfortunately it doesn't give the dates of birth or ages that you often get on baptisms of children. |

No, I haven't seen/found those before, what a find and it will keep me busy for a while, but looking good...... Stanhope Buildings is definitely where Emma and John Lumber lived
I had often wondered if there could have been a bulk baptism after the demise (whatever that was ) of Henry Devlin. Arthur John Lumber was born in Cardiff....... Last edited by Sue at the seaside; 21-04-14 at 22:07. |

Here they are at 24 Stanhope Buildings on the 1891 census, ancestry has transcribed their surname as Funches instead of Lumber! I will put in a correction.
1891 census To be fair, I'm not sure I would know it said Lumber if I didn't know already. And no wonder we never found them before as none of the birthplaces match what we had! John F Lumber Head M 29 Superintendent of Model Dwellings Bristol Emily Do Wife M 30 Do Henry Do Son 11 Scholar Do Emily Do Daur 9 Do London Southk Arthur Do Son 6 Do St Saviours Sydney Son 2 " |
