Turns out there is a variant spelling - Jorye, so now I am trying that and finding quite a few more references to Joseph.

Ooh, I've just found the marriage of a John Hodges and a Mary Jory 27 Dec 1660 at St Andrew, Plymouth, so it looks likely that they could be the parents of Sir Nathaniel Hodges, and that Mary Jory could be the sister of Joseph Jory and aunt to Frances.

There is a Joseph Jorye, son of Nicholas, baptised 16 Mar 1646 at Plymouth St Andrew, and a Mary Jorye, daughter of Nicholas and Jenefare, baptised 18 May 1636 at the same church. But there are a lot of Jorys there so not certain this is them yet, and I can't see a brother John for them.

Found the PCC will of Nicholas Jory of Plymouth, written 19 Jul, 1654 and proved 22 Apr 1657, and he mentions his eldest son Nicholas Jory, son Greenfeild Jory, daughter Mary Jory (under the age of 24), wife Junifrid, and four youngest children Benjamin, Joseph, Sidrach and John. So it does look as though it all fits together. Need to find out more about John and Mary Hodges, though, as their marriage was after Nicholas Jory's death.

And Jinifer Jory is among a list of Plymouth non-conformists in a book, which fits with the Jory family and the Hodges family that I am tracing.

So Frances would probably be the daughter of Nicholas Junior, Greenfield, Benjamin,Sidrach or John ?
Sorry, that's not helpful really ! Familysearch has a Devon baptism for a Beniamin Jorie for 1643, and Sydrach in 1650. They fit in with a 1657 will for Nicholas. Familysearch says you can view the images if you are at a familysearch centre, or a signed in member. Is there something about this source which makes me think "non-conformist" or is that wishful thinking ? "England, Devon, Parish Registers, 1538-1912" Sidrick/Sydrach/Sidrake seems to have been quite popular with the Jorye/Jory family - cannot tell if they are all related, as some are in the same source. The earliest is 1601 at St Andrew Plymouth. Di |

Joseph Jorey (m Frances Russell) had only one son Randolph who was born about 1683, and attended Oxford
Alumni Oxonienses 1500-1714 Jorye, Randolph s. Jos., of the island of Nevis, arm. St. John's Coll., matric. 3 Nov., 1699, aged 16 ; admon. at Oxford 26 Nov., 1702. Sorry, I have just reviewed and see you already have that ! Could Randolph and Frances have been born in Nevis ? Last edited by marquette; 15-02-14 at 22:37. |

Thanks for all that, Marquette. I can view the images on Findmypast. No, they aren't non-conformist registers, they are the parish registers. The non-conformism would come a bit later.
That is the right baptism for Benjamin - Beniamin son of Nic & Jenefare Jorie baptised 14 May 1643 at St Andrew, Plymouth. Also Jenefare daughter of Nicholas & Jenfare Jorye baptised 11 Apr 1641, buried 24 May 1642. And Nicholas son of Nicholas Jorye baptised 15 Jan 1633. And Sydrach son of Nichas Jory baptised 21 May 1650. |
