Thumbs up Talks by Anthony Marr

If anyone gets the opportunity to hear a talk by Anthony Marr, I would really recommend him.

Just listened to a talk on birth registration. I have only been researching since the 1960s and I cannot believe the number of errors, mistakes and misconceptions that I held.

For example, "maiden name" is the name a woman held on first contracting marriage, so in theory an unmarried mother does not have a maiden name.

Also, in the GRO's electronic birth indexes, the indexers were to look for "formerly" as an indication of maiden name. As one registrar used "late" until corrected, his entries do not show a maiden name in the indexes!

I'm looking forward to the handout as I cannot remember everything he said!
