1871 census: 477 Mile End Road, Stepney

1891 census: MISSING...though wife & children are in West Wittering, Sussex. Family legend has it that he visited Russia & Australia at some point before his last child’s birth (1898). I have found William Crisp a labourer leaving London 6 March 1890 and arriving in New Zealand 21 Apr 1890. Departure at that time might explain the family settling in West Wittering, a baby was born 18 Feb 1890 in Catford and died in West Wittering at the end of March. His wife had family there and may have moved so she could get some support from her two unmarried female cousins.
1901 census: West Wittering
1911 census: Myrtle Cottage, West Wittering

Date, place and cause of death: 14 Dec 1920, @ Myrtle Cottage West Wittering. Malignant disease of pharynx, Asthenia. Informant Florence C Simpson, daughter of Myrtle Cottage.
Date and place of burial / cremation: West Wittering, date unknown, gravestone no longer exists, (last seen in 1960s)
Details of will / administration of their estate - if applicable: No will went to probate
Memorial inscription - if any. Lost, as gravestone has disappeared

Here he is William James Crisp on post #5, the young man with the child (all four are called William James Crisp). I also have a photo of him with my great grandmother on the occasion of their engagement, and one with a friend and their pennyfarthings, the victorian equivalent of a young man with a flashy sports car.

Newspaper reports also reveal that he was a parish councillor and a private in the Volunteer Training Corps during WW1.
