This is probably a red herring, but because you said his middle name was William, I've been looking at this family on the 1861 census - not the George who is too old, but the William who is about the right age:

Tranch Wood, Trevethin, Monmouthshire
John Baker Head M 53 Collier Monm Panteg
Mary Do Wife M 55 Do
George Do Son U 24 Miner Trevethen
John Do Do Do 22 Collier Do
Ann Do Dau 18 Do
Mary Do Do 14 Do
William Do Son 7 Do

Trevethin is just outside Pontypool.

But I haven't managed to find out anything else about them to rule them in or out yet.

Going to contact Monmouthshire reg office tomorrow and see if its the same on at Usk I think it was and no couldnt find death for him but its awkward trying to do searches on tablet well for me yet but nothing for those yrs in tees valley indexes
