Can you explain what you mean about the 1841 census saying his wife is Elizabeth Dunstone, please? I can't see where it says it on there?

This is the 1851 census entry:
Puriton, Somerset
Richard Westlake Head Widr 76 Parish Church Clerk Somerset Puriton
Harriet Meaker Grand Daur U 19 Dress Maker Do Do
Thomas Meaker Grand Son 10 Do Do

So if you can get a look at the Puriton parish registers, you should find his writing in them! He will probably have signed a few pages.

Burial on FreeREG - Richard Westlake buried at Puriton St Michael, 24 May 1857, age 84, abode Puriton.

The marriage also at Puriton, 6 Sep 1797, Richard Westlake / Elizabeth Dunstone. - on the Puriton transcriptions on Somerset Record Office website.
http://www.somerset.gov.uk/archives/...se/Parregs.htm

And according to FreeREG, he was a witness at a lot of marriages at Puriton, which is usual for a parish clerk.

Baptism also at Puriton, Richard Westlake baptised 4 Jun 1775, parents Robert and Sarah. (Again, from the Somerset Record Office transcription.)

Elizabeth Westlake burial 29 Oct 1848, age 82.

Thanks for all that advice Kite - I was asleep while you were working on it - many thanks.

Elizabeth Westlake was Elizabeth Dunstone before she married Richard. Married in Puriton, Somerset, Eng. on 17 April 1763. Actually I am wondering if this is correct, since they didin't have their children till 1797??

Just noticed you had a marriage 6 Sep 1797 - that sounds much more logical.

Kite this is the problem I had before. I have Richard's father Robert baptized 12 June 1768 - this can't be right?

I have an idea that Miriam Westlake married a Meakin - does anyone know his name, and his children of which 2 grand children were born approx 1832 & 1841 Harriet and Thomas resp.

Very unlikely to be Richard's father, must be some other relative.
