There is a non-conformist baptism on FamilySearch for a John Carter, son of Thomas and Mary, 20 Jan 1774. HERTFORDSHIRE: Hitchin, Back Street Meeting (Independent or Paedobaptist Congregational): Births & Baptisms
Image is on BMD Registers (pay site)

Also another John Carter baptised at the same place 16 Sep 1778, parents John and Mary, and one 31 May 1777 at St Mary's church, Hitchin, parents John and Sarah.

Thanks for looking Kate. Yes, I've always fancied John, son of Thomas & Mary especially as his wife was from a non-con family but Thomas & Mary baptised children at Back St in 1772, 74 & 76 whilst living at St Pauls Walden & I believe it was the same couple who moved to Breachwood Green (4km) & continued baptising at Back St 1779, 81, 84, 88, 89 & another John in 1792. This John survives to the census. I have no proof that the first John died but it seems likely.

John is aged 54 at death so I feel 1778 (also born that year) is a bit late & the 1777 one dies in 1780 anyway.
