I haven't researched this. It's information that came to light when I posted James Laurie's thread thanks to Shona, and I need to investigate further.

A Charles Laurie appears on the 1797/1798 farm horse tax rolls - living at Moss-side, Greenhall, Maryculter.

Yes, they are. I love going through them! You can search them for free on Scotland's Places. Here's the link:

They have other rolls as well, but you have to subscribe to see them. I have a sub, so I'll have a look on the other rolls. Mind you, most of my ancestors didn't have watches, clocks, servants and carriages!
