Elizabeth, why do you think those baptisms go with that marriage?
If you look at the map, although Portsea and Affpuddle are not too distant, Portsmouth is over 60 miles away as the crow flies.

Erm, it's Affpuddle that's a long way from Portsea and Portsmouth!
I guess Elizabeth chose that marriage because of the date and forename combination. However, there are at least half a dozen burials for people named Joseph Isaac(s) in Portsea/Portsmouth, any one of which might be the father of Ann, so that name isn't particularly uncommon. There is only one burial for a Frances though: Fanny Isaac 4th April 1801 in Portsea - but as there is no age at burial we can't match it with a baptism for Frances Charles.

As I say, this is speculation on my part. I should add I have the Hampshire marriage and baptism CDs so I have trawled the transcripts fairly thoroughly. |

Sorry Elizabeth - Google maps sent me on the wrong track ...

I have looked quite hard at various Dorset sites and CDs for evidence of Joseph and Frances remaining in Dorset after their marriage, but not found anything

Thanks, Merry! That is encouraging. My Portsea ancestors pre-1810 give me lots of headaches.

The rest of them are just there, in Portsmouth. As the parishes of Portsea & Portsmouth were so large, the pre 1812 entries are so brief that it is usually impossible to disentangle families. All you can be certain of is that most of them would not have been indigenous.

Yes, Phoenix is correct.
My 3x great grandfather Thomas Quintrell was born in St Blazey, Cornwall. He went to the naval dockyard in Portsmouth to work, but returned to St Blazey in 1818 to marry his sweetheart Elizabeth Daddow. They returned to Portsea and raised their family there. I have families earlier than that which are far harder to unravel. As Phoenix there, they turn up in Portsmouth, no indication where they were from. |
