Ooh, I was just looking at NROCAT for something else entirely and had a quick look for Seamans while I was there, and I found a Removal Order dated 14th Apr 1801 for Abigail, wife of William Seaman, labourer, removed from Norwich St Paul to Hockering.

William and Abigail Seaman had a son George christened at Norwich St Paul 19 May 1805.

We found a possible baptism for my William jr (son of the William who is the subject of this thread) on another thread:

Post #11 - William Symonds baptised 5 Jul 1818 at St Giles Norwich, dob 1st Jul 1818. This is the right parish for my William jr but a few years younger than my William said he was when he joined the army.

Plus the name Symonds seemed quite far removed from Seaman.

BUT - if Abigail Seaman was removed to Hockering, it is likely that her husband was born there. There doesn't seem to be a William Seaman (or anyone called Seaman) baptised at Hockering, but there is a William Semmons baptised there in 1766, and quite a few other people with surname Semmons, Semons, and a Henry Seamans. 1766 would be about right for my William senior, so I'm going to pencil that in and see where it takes me!

Edit - also on that other thread, there was a William Jonathan Simmons baptised 1813 and died 1817, son of William and Abigail, and the 1766 Hockering baptism has father Jonathan so that fits too.

Sounds promising, Kite! Norfolk people have a depresing habit of swallowing their words, so they do get mangled a lot.

I've just looked at the entry for Abigail Seaman's death in the Poor Law Record images on FamilySearch and it says hers was the "first Death in New Workhouse" (24 Oct 1859).

Oh dear, I've just found that the William Semmons who was baptised at Hockering in 1766, son of Jonathan and Mary, died as a baby, since there is a burial for him on the same page of the AT's as his baptism. I can't find another William baptised there and I even managed to find the BT's for 1769-70 and check those. But if Abigail was removed to Hockering, there must be some connection with the place, so I will need to keep digging.
