Default John Gray 1844-1917

Born 25 Aug 1844, Hardley, Norfolk
John Gray, son of William Gray, labourer by and Susannah, formerly Dunt.
Registered by Susannah Dunt, mother, of Hardley, 04 Sep 1844.

Baptised: although the baptisms of his elder brothers William and Robert and his younger brother Samuel are in the Hardley baptism registers, there is no baptism for John. Possibly he was baptised privately and the vicar failed to record it in the register.

Between the baptisms of Frederick in Nov 1871 and Lemuel in Feb 1874, John changed occupation from fisherman to labourer.
NB is this when his brothers William, Samuel & Robert had a fatal accident? Family story from my Dad was that several members of one family were killed in a fishing accident. Robert only appears 1851, Samuel 51 and 61 and William in 1871.

According to The Times Dec 11, 1872 three seamen (unnamed) were washed overboard in gales at Lowestoft.

Times Thurs Oct 09, 1873
"LOST AT SEA
Intelligence was received at Yarmouth yesterday that a fishing lugger, believed to belong to Lowestoft, was run down in the morning, while fishing, some 25 miles off, by the screw steamer Osborne of Leith, bound for Rotterdam. All the men were drowned but one, who was saved by the steamer's boat and taken on to Rotterdam. The crew consisted of ten men, all told."

The memorial stone is transcribed in "Monumental Inscriptions in Lympanhoe [sic] churchyard, 1964", microfilm seen LDS London 14 Mar 2009, so the stone was placed some time before 1964. I recall visiting the churchyard and photographing the memorial in about 1967 and my Dad saying he thought Ruth and John's grandaughter Eleanor Gorton [daur of their daughter Elizabeth] put it up.

Presumably he died in 1917, not 1817!
