Default George William Barks

This is especially poignant to me this week as George's first cousin once removed and also my first cousin once removed died yesterday. RIP Jean.

George William Barks was born in Balderton, Nottinghamshire on the 29th January 1897. He was the first cousin of my paternal grandmother.

His parents were William Henry Barks and Jessie Elizabeth nee Keith.

George was killed in action in Dublin during the Easter Rising in the Irish Rebellion on 26 April 1916.

Military history:

2793 8th Battalion Notts and Derby Regiment.(Sherwood Forresters)
Enlisted October 1914 at Newark, Nottinghamshire

George had previously been in the Boys Brigade.
At the time of enlistment he was 17 years and 9 months old and a farm labourer employed by J Simpson. His home address was 3 Balderton Cottages, Balderton, Newark.
His height was 5ft 6In and chest fully expanded was 34and half inches with an expansion of 2 and half inches. Vision normal and health good. Examined on 24 Oct 1914.

Embodied Service: 24 Oct 1914 - 26 Apr 1916

9 Mar 1916 George was appointed Lance Corporal (unpaid)
13 Apr 1916 George was appointed Lance Corporal (paid)
26 Apr 1916 George was killed in action

Served for 1 year and 185 days (Home front - Ireland)

Next of kin: William Henry Barks - father- of 3 Balderton Cottages

Died in the Easter Rising in Dublin.

Perhaps unusually he is buried in the churchyard of St Giles, Balderton, Nottinghamshire. I did take a photograph of his headstone but I seem to have lost it.
Rosie Knees can you help in this, as you live in the vicinity?

His military record:

I certainly can Marg, if I can find him. May have to speak to the vicar/verger to see if there's a map of headstones.

We stumbled across it easily years ago. Must be 20 years since we visited Balderton.
