1901 search if anyone has the time
I'm trying to do some research on an address (29 Darnley Road, Hackney London) a large amount of my Dad's family lived there. In my hunting I've also found that my Mum's great Aunt lived there as well, totally unexpected!!!! But where was this great Aunt in 1901, can anyone find her?? She was living at 29 Darnley Road in 1908.
She is Cecilia Matthews (sometimes Celia) Born 1861 Bethnal Green, she was unmarried in 1901. There is a likely looking person in Croydon, but really don't think it is her, occupation is wrong and so are the sibling's ages (and some of the names) Her parents are dead by then. It's just a curiosity really, but would like to find this out for completeness |

The Croydon lot are definitely not yours. They appear to be born Aldersgate, children of Thomas (hatter) and Jane

Have you seen the comment on the 1901 census for 29 Darnley Rd in 1901? "House empty, being done up for occupation. Caretaker left"
Were they there before 1901?

Quote:
Cecilia was there - on the ER in 1908,( but how does that happen when women didn't have the vote????????) Perhaps they were the first occupants. I'll recheck the ERs. Dad's family were there from about 1917 onwards. His Great grandma, His father and in another flat his mother (they married from there) It all gets very complicated, there were loads of them! |

Cecelia may have had a property qualification. Ancestry jumble up all sorts of different electoral rolls. In Croydon, females could vote in local elections by virtue of being householders.

Women had the right to vote in council elections from 1894, so would appear on the electoral registers. I don't think it was all women, though.

I had wondered that, I think she was doing OK for herself. Thanks for that other info for the census. That gives me a good starting point. So I wonder where she did live?

What occupation should she have? There is a Cecila Matthews age 37, head of household, single, born Bethnal Green living in Hackney, her occupation is Machinist. Same address as a George Matthews age 43.

That'll be her as she's a boot machinist and George is a shoe maker.
