Default "Public Honours"

Can anyone please tell me what was meant by "buried ....... with public

honours" in a Victorian obit?

Would it have meant lots of kind things said, etc ?

If it wasn't Military honours, then it would mean that some person or organisation of importance was involved in the funeral and burial ceremony.

Nowadays (where I live) it often means the roads are closed and police etc are involved as stewards. the last "public honours" funeral I remember locally was for a man who had given an unstinting lifetime of service to the local community.

Thanks OC - he would have loved that! He was something of a pillar of

community - Local Board member, Secretary of the Assembly Rooms,

Secretary & Treasurer of the local hunt etc.
