Default Marion B Carrell

Marion B Carrell was born on 20 Sep 1873 in Georiga, USA.

On 11 Dec 1893 he married Leona M Payne (b. 11 Jun 1875, d. 5 Jan 1937), daughter of Asa W Payne, in Jackson Co, Alabama, USA. Marion and John Carrell signed as witnesses.

On 23 Oct 1895, John R Carrell (b. Jul 1868) married Octavia Jane Payne (b. 7 Jun 1877, d. 24 Mar 1961), also the Daughter of Asa W Payne, in Jackson Co, Alabama.

There has been speculation that Marion B and John R were brothers and the sons of James A Carrell (b. Abt. 1833) of Paulding Co, Georgia. However, as I've been unable to find James A Carrell in the 1870 or 1880 U.S. Census records, I haven't been able to substantiate this assertion.

James A Carrell was in Paulding Co, Georgia during the census of 1850 living with his parents Benjamin and Doshy Carrell. As of the census of 1860, James A had married and had his first son in Haralson Co, Georgia (neighbor to Paulding Co). I have nothing for James A again until the 1900 census, which shows him as living with his wife and remaining children in Polk Co, Gerogia (bordering Haralson and Paulding counties).

During that gap, John R and Marion B were born, raised, and married.

I have not been able to tie either Marion B or John R to other families in the 1870 or 1880 census records. So, it is entirely possible that they are, in fact, the son's of James A. I just need documentation to support or refute it.

Any assistance the community could provide regarding this would be greatly appreciated.

Hello and welcome to the forum!

Are you saying that there were two Marion Carrells, one who married Leona Payne and one who witnessed their marriage, please? Or is that a mistake? If there were two then I would guess that one was probably the son of the other.

No, my understanding is that the groom and the Marion that signed are one in the same based on other marriage records in the same set.

Working from public ancestry trees (which I realise can be inaccurate), the children of this family seem to match the Carrells in names and ages:

https://www.ancestry.co.uk/interacti...nSearchResults
1880 census Nineteenth, Paulding County, Georgia
Hogan M L 43 Farmer b Arkansas, father born Tenn, mother born Va
Catharine 33 Wife Keeping House born Georgia, father born NC, mother born Va
Julyann 18 daughter At school
James 17 son At school
Franklin 14 son Work on farm
Benjamin 13 son Work on farm
J R 12 son Work on farm
Charles 10 son At school
Joseph 8 son
Morgan 6 son
Susan 3 daughter
Mary 2 dau
Marshal 5 months (born Feb) son
All the children say born Georgia, parents both born Georgia, which doesn't fit with M L Hogan being their father. It looks as though a new household number was written in next to Julyann's name and then erased. So I would say it's probably the enumerator's mistake to have listed the children as Hogans.

If this is the correct family then I suppose "Morgan" would be Marion, and J R would be John.

The previous page (image 3 of 14) of that 1880 census that Kite posted has a family transcribed by Ancestry as:
Carroll J. A. 47
Carroll Elvira 39
Carroll Mary 13
Carroll Cintha 10
Carroll J. B. 5
Carroll Sarah 3
J.A. Carroll family
If he's the same James A., the age is about right as he was age 15 on that census of 1850 living with his parents Benjamin and Doshy Carrell.

Also, is that the same Doshy, now spelled Dosie Carroll, listed as Mother on image 13 of 14, Line 9? She's with a Mary Mitchell, and next door on the same page starting on Line 1 is the family of Milton Carroll.

There are more Carrolls on image 5 and image 6, and on image 7 is a family of Carrolls starting line 20 with the wife named Julyann b. about 1840.

This looks to be that Hogan couple in 1870 and they have two children, Nancy 4 and William 2, confirming that the children on the 1880 census aren't theirs:

- Francis (46) f

I did not find Doshie Carrell nor any of James A Carrell's family (James A, Amanda, Lewis L) in the 1870 census.

(John) Milton Carroll (59) m

Mary Mitchell (37) f -- widowed -- possibly Melinda of Benjamin and Doshie Carrell
- Robert (10) m
- Edward (7) m
- Benjamin (3) m
- Dosie Carroll (70) f -- possibly widow of Thomas Benjamin Carrell

L L Carroll (20) m -- probable son of James A and Amanda based on other records
- Sarah J (22) f

J (John) Y Carroll (26) m - probable son of John M., grandson of Benjamin
- Mary (21) f

G (George) W Carroll (36) m - probable son of Benjamin
- Julyann (40) f
- Robert (15) m
- William (13) m
- Sarah (11) f
- Emily (7) f
- Mary (4) f

J A Carroll (47) m -- possibly James A
- Elvira (39) f -- possibly Amanda as I did not find any matching Elvira's in other census records before or after 1880.
- Mary (13) f
- Cintha (10) f
- J B (5) m
- Sarah (3) f

If this is James A Carrell, John R (age 11-12) and Marion B (age 6-7) are not listed as children.
