Default (36) Benjamin Bernard Backshall 3194 Suffolk Cyclist Regiment, and Suffolk Regiment

36th of the St Wilfrid's School, Haywards Heath to die in WW1.

Benjamin was born in 1884 in Cuckfield, Sussex by 1891 he lived in Haywards Heath with parents Benjamin and Fanny and sister Emma Jane at 4 Holly Bank Cottages, Triangle Road. Another brother, Reginald, was born in 1893. Their father was a bricklayer working on the railway network. In 1911 they were still living with parents; Ben was a gardener and Reginald, a butcher.

Benjamin died in Ipswich, Suffolk on 3 Mar 1917 and is buried in St Wilfrid’s Churchyard, Haywards Heath. Reginald was killed in action on 8 Jul 1916 and is commemorated on the Loos Memorial in France and has no known grave, he is also commemorated on his brother’s gravestone.

MID SUSSEX TIMES MARCH 1917
THE LATE PRIVATE B B BACKSHALL
On the 10th inst last, in the presence of a large number of sympathising friends, the mortal remains of the late Private Bernard Benjamin Backshall, who passed away in a military hospital in Ipswich, were laid to rest in St Wilfrid’s Churchyard.

The Rev W H Neal was the officiating clergyman. The chief mourners were Mr & Mrs Backshall (parents), Miss Backshall (sister), Miss Isard (fiancée), Mr and Mrs W Backshall (uncle and aunt), Mr and Mrs French (uncle and aunt).


His fiancée was Adelaide Isard, she was born in Newick, Sussex in 1890 and in 1911 was in domestic service working for a timber merchant in Balcombe Road, about half an hour’s walk from her sweetheart’s house. She died unmarried in 1963. His sister was also unmarried at her death in 1973.

On 25th May 1917 his father received his effects or wages owing of £3 7d, he was not eligible for a War Gratuity.
