Default Frederick Henry Linford 21630 Private, 12th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment

34th of the Old Boys of St Wilfrid's School, Haywards Heath, Sussex to lose his life in WW1.

Born in 1894 in Maids Moreton, Buckinghamshire to Thomas Henry and Barbara Linford, Frederick was the eldest of 3 children. They were still in Buckinghamshire in 1901 where his father was a groom, in 1911 they lived at 2 Westbourne Cottages, Gower Road, Haywards Heath, Frederick was 16 and working as gardener, his father was both a groom and gardener.

Frederick was killed in action in France on 31 July 1916 and is buried at Philosophe British Cemetery, Mazingarbe grave I. K. 45. His parents, next of kin, were living at 57 Gower Road.

There was a piece about him in the Sussex Agricultural Express on 11 August 1916:
DEATH OF ANOTHER LOCAL SOLDIER
On Sunday Mr & Mrs Linford of Gower Road received the sad news from a Chaplain in France that their son, Private FH Linford of the Suffolk Regiment (Bantams) had been killed in action. He was only 21 years of age.


(Bantams were under the normal minimum height of 160cm or 5 feet 3 inches. )

His mother Barbara was received his effects of £2 4s 9d and War Gratuity of £3.
