Emma had a very sad early life loosing both parents and about 4 brothers and sisters to a combination of T.B. and typhoid. By 1861 she was living with an uncle and aunt. Like many girls in her situation she trained as a governess to be able to find a job with a home.

Later when her children were young, (she had eight,) she started a school and became its first headmistress.
