Default Records and History for Militia Units

I'm trying to find details of membership and activities in several Scottish militia units during the approx period 1790-1820 - specifically the Forres Volunteers, the Ross and Cromarty Fencibles, Morayshire Volunteers and an Irish militia regiment probably based around Kilkenny. I was recently in Scotland (I'm based in New Zealand) and was able to visit the Heritage Centre at Elgin Library and the museum in Forres; they referred me to the Army museum at nearby Fort George. At Fort George, the response was that they didn't have information on militia units, and frankly were not that helpful, suggesting the local libraries and museums.

I'm looking in particular for references to my great-great-grandfather Patrick Fogarty, who was a member of each of those units at some time or other, and his commanding officer in the Forres Volunteers, Captain (later Major) Patrick Strachan, with whom he had a strong relationship (he named one of his sons Patrick Strachan Fogarty in honour of him).

What I have is a record of a Patrick Fogarty being discharged as a Kilmainham Pensioner in Ireland (aged 28) - but nothing to suggest he is "my" Patrick Fogarty, and a few references taken from books in the Elgin Library and from contemporary newspapers which give a small amount of colour about the Forres Volunteers and one or two references to Captain/Major Strachan, but nothing of great significance. The other material I have has mostly come from the birth records of Patrick Fogarty's children, in which he gave his occupation as being a member of the militia units noted above at various times. Even the books about militia units are very patchy indeed and don't seem to include all known units.

Does anyone have any suggestions on where further research might be directed? Or perhaps know of a military historian (or genealogist) who has specialised in militia units? Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Default Patrick Strachan information

Hi there,
I know this is an old post, but since very very relevant and timely for me, I’m responding anyway. Major Patrick Strachan was my 4th great grandfather. I recently came to learn that he had been a member of the West Florida Royal Foresters and ran a large plantation near what is now Mobile Alabama starting around 1763. He was also a surveyor and mapmaker and some of his work can be found online and in museums there. When the Spanish laid seige to Pensacola in 1781, he was a Captain and led a troop of around 30 men. The British ultimately lost that battle and surrendered West Florida to Spain. Patrick abandoned his 11,000 acre estate and apparently made his way to New York for a time with other loyalists. What he did for the next 20+ years is unclear, but he did construct a home he named Trafalgar Cottages in Forres Scotland in the early 1800s, which can be seen on an old map that included his name. He died at Trafalgar Cottage in 1826.
