The main clue I have is her uncle Charles Baines who I assume was Thomas's brother is on the 1881 census as born 1822 Hallatrow Rutland a grocer and grazier of 10 acres employing 3 men and 1 boy. My greatgrandmother Emma married Thomas Horne who was a grocer and farmer.

So the details of his marriage are as you posted on your other thread - 13 Jun 1835 at Preston, Rutland?

And this is the 1871 census entry which it sounds as though you already have:
High Street, Hallaton Charles Baines Head M 49 Grocer Draper &c Lestersh Hallaton Sarah Do Wife Mar 55 Do Tugby Lucy Do Daur Unm 19 Do Hallaton Anne Do Daur Unm 18 Do Do Julia Do Daur Un 17 Do Do Emma Baines Niece Unm 26 Do Leicester Anne Goward Sister in Law Unm 49 Farmer's Daur Do Tugby Interesting, since in 1881 Charles' wife is Ann age 59 born Tugby! There is a likely death for Sarah Jan-Mar 1872 Uppingham district age 58, but I can't see a marriage between Charles and Ann, perhaps because of the fact that it was illegal to marry your deceased wife's sister in those days. Bother, I was hoping you could get their marriage certificate and it would tell you the name of Charles' and Thomas' father. Still, maybe Charles will turn out to have married Sarah after 1837 in which case it will still be possible... |

Ah yes, this looks like Charles' marriage:
Oct-Dec 1844 Oundle, Charles Baines / Sarah Goward, vol 15 p 633. So if you get that marriage certificate it should tell you the name of Charles' father, who should be Thomas' father as well. |

Thanks Kite. I did have the 1871 census and the marriage but well spotted for Charle's marriage. Emma is at school in 1861. I think any records for this family are likely to be nonconfornist.
I wish I could find Charles in 1841. He might even be with his parents. Interesting that in the 1901 census Ann is on her own with Lucy and Julia relationship nieces. Last edited by anne fraser; 20-03-10 at 20:17. |
