Death certificate question.
Does anyone know if a child died on the way from England to Australia in 1855, would there be a death certificate anywhere?
There’s not one in Australia, even though his name is on a headstone with his brother who died here. I have looked through the UK ones as much as I can but can’t find him and presume his death would not have been recorded in UK anyway. Just wondering if there is a list of those who died at sea anywhere.

There's deaths at sea on FMP. What's the child's name?

Oh, forget that - they don't start early enough

Having said that, the GRO Marine Death Indices start before 1855, but I'm not sure exactly what sort of deaths are included on that one. Anyway, happy to look if you need it.

I believe that deaths at sea were supposed to be registered at the next port, but I have no idea whether that actually happened.

Thanks. He’s Simeon James Huband, aged 3, son of James (John James) Huband and his wife Emma Née Ruby.

I couldn't find anything, but a lot of people have this on Ancestry trees:
12 Oct 1855 Sulawesi Tengah, Indonesia I couldn't see that anyone had a source for this information. BTW, he wasn't aged 3 as his birth was registered in Q1 1855. Some people have birth info: 13 Jan 1855 Stonehouse, Devon, but again, no source recorded.

Edit: One of them I have is: https://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/...08&usePUB=true But he died at sea aboard the Whirlwind. Scarletina was the cause of death. Last edited by maggie_4_7; 30-08-21 at 09:05. |

Merry The one I have posted above who is part of my Sayer family registered in Tasmania but on some trees they have exactly that too, Sulawesi Tengah, Indonesia no idea where this is sourced from. I think I checked the ship's manifesto (not on Ancestry) of course I have forgotten to cite it, rule number 1 broken there |

The ships passenger list might have him named as having died enroute.
Have a distant twig with a child dying on board the Gala on route to either Australia or New Zealand c1850's
