Poss marriage between Thomas Payne and Rebecca Sadler in 1802. This marriage occurred at St James Paddington, which is the same church as the first child is born.

Alternate spelling is Payn.

There is also a marriage of a Thomas Payne to a Rebecca Peters on 2 September 1804 at St Peter, Petersham, Surrey. It states they were both "of this Parish by Sojourn", but I don't know what that means. Maybe they were only there temporarily.

I take it that you have children both sides of the move to Merton to prove it is the same family?

What was Thomas's occupation in the Merton entries?

The eldest child is OH's direct relative. I found him on ancestry's London records and then found 2 more in Middlesex. There was an odd gap in the births which I couldn't fill.

I don't know when OH's relative came to Australia but he could have been on the 1841 census so I started checking. Couldn't find anything on the 1841 but then I found the sister Ella living with another sister I knew nothing about in 1861. The new sister was born in Surrey. The other children came from there. It also helped to realise the alternative spelling of Payn.

Thomas was a cutter in Merton. the London entries didn't have an occupation.

Just researched the 1841 as I didn't try with payn before. Thomas is there will Ella, Maryann and Louisa, his daughters. No mention of Rebecca. It says Thomas was from Surrey so that explains the move.

He was a calico print cutter.
