I thought it was lovely alliteration and could not resist ! And I love the name Brighthelmstone, rather than just Brighton.

Is it pronounced as it is spelt? It looks b..eautiful anyhow.
Did they have children with names starting with B.. or did Sophia feel left out..?

I don't know how Brighthelmstone was pronounced, maybe it was always spoken as Brighton ? Maybe one of our Sussex members would know ?

And no, not all their children started with a B
- Susannah, Sophia Lee, Elizabeth, Mary, Thomas Benjamin, William, Henry, Sarah Ann, James and my ggg grandma Susan Eliza Louisa.

I don't know why they had both Susannah and Susan - although it seems that the "Susan" was only added between official Registration (Eliza Louisa) and baptism.

I have considered if Susannah (born 1820) might have really been Susan's (b1841) mother, but cannot see why they would have done that.

In my family tree one couple named three of their daughters Mary after their mother. The first two died and then the third was named Mary Ann. Fortunately she survived - I think they had 18 children. Sometimes you find similar names in siblings if they are being named after other family members. It might be in your family that the parents had an aunt Susannah and a good friend Susan. My parents named my sister after an aunt and my brother after an uncle, with me she just like the name lol

Well, I think Susannah survived and was married just before Susan was born, so it must have been another reason, maybe it was because Susannah had left home, that they could use Susan again.

The pronunciation of Brighthelmstone got contracted to "Brighton" so spelling was chenged to reflect this. You can see 5 Bloomsbury St on google maps but in a few weeks I'll be going a couple of streets away to photograph the place where my great aunt was in service in 1911 so will pop by and get some photos for you.

5 Bloomsbury Street. It was lovely sunny day in Brighton, but the light makes the contrasts rather stark. It's a nice little street, in a sought after part of town.
