The 1851 census gives his birthplace as Great Ellingham, and the new familysearch site has a baptism for Stephen Cady there in 1777, parents William and Elizabeth:

There's also a probable marriage for William and Elizabeth in 1767:

Thanks Mary - I've looked into those and they seem good. There are even images on the familysearch site
It was Elizabeth's second marriage.
