This one looks familiar!

You do already have him on later censuses, don't you? (Before we all go charging off looking for him!) I think we more or less established before that Sarah Barton who he is with on the 1841 and 1851 censuses is his mother and Edward Barton is his stepfather?

Ooh, there's a baptism on FamilySearch Record Search pilot site for a John Murr Close, 27 Feb 1825, St Botoloph, Lincoln, father Henry Close, and there is another version of it on there with only the year but giving the parents as Henry and Sarah. Then there is a burial for Henry Close 13 Mar 1828 Lincoln age 28, which fits in nicely with Sarah Close's marriage to Edward Barton in 1833.

Henry Close married Sarah Murr 16 Sep 1822 St Botolph Lincoln, also on the pilot site.

On the baptism of Robert Henry Close 10 Jul 1869 St Martin's, Lincoln, it gives the parents' names as John Mar Close and Mary Ann. Probably Mar is a mistranscription of Mur. Edit - looking again, there are several other versions of this record on the pilot site and the rest say Mur! (Robert Henry died the same quarter that his birth was registered, which is why he isn't on the 1871 census).

sorry Kate, some of what you've said looks verrrrry familiar! I've just taken details from my FTM and may have more in my paper files. I think a big effort was put into looking at the Close family for me late last year but 'stuff' was going on and I didn't get round to updating my FTM.

I will search through my hard copy stuff and see what I've got.

finally the penny has dropped! A huge amount of info was found by the generations game team on FTF and I've found the thread from August last year.

I've got the gedcom so I'll update post number 1.
