Sue, can I ask about the indentures you found where he was released and bound again - was there actually any documents saying that he'd been released?

I have someone from the right village, right name and date being bound as an apprentice in London but as a carpenter, not a barber surgeon which is what I need him to be!

(Sorry to go slightly off-topic)

Lindsay, it was sheer fluke that I found the two Merchant Taylor documents. One of the records has been indexed with the wrong date I was looking to see if William had taken any apprentices himself and found gold

These are the two documents showing his original indenture and his release. Both from Ancestry's Freedom of the City Admission records

Indenture to Merchant Taylors, 1784

Release from Merchant Taylors, Sept 1785 - there is a note at the top right hand side about Painter Stainers

and finally from UK Register of Duties Paid for Apprentices' Indentures, Oct 1785 Indenture to a Painter Stainer in the City.

Thanks, Sue, it helps to know what I'm looking for.

My goodness, you were lucky that fragment showing his release survived!
