Name - "official" name and what they were known as
Thomas Brazill, also spelled Brazell and many variations and transcriptions

James Brazill and his wife, Mary, nee Green

10 Aug 1766, St George Colegate, Norwich, Norfolk

married twice, first marriage unknown.
married Mary Smith, daughter of John Smith Junior, at St Dunstan in the East, London, 14 Jan 1798. Thomas was noted as a widower.


Occupation(s) - if any
mariner, barge builder, ship captain

Addresses where they lived (including county if in UK) - and please list which censuses you have or haven't found him/her on (if s/he lived in census times!).

1798 - London (daughter Mary apparently born, no baptism located)
1800-1806 - Great Yarmouth, Norfolk (baptisms of daughters - Sophia 1802, Elizabeth Smith 1804 and Elizabeth 1806)
1807-1814 - prisoner of the French during the Napoleonic Wars, "prisoner at Besona"
1815-1837 - London (son William Thomas Francis baptised at St Mary Rotherhithe, 9 Apr 1815)
23 April 1838 - Arrived per "Kinnear" Sydney with wife Mary, son William Thomas Francis Brazill, his wife Sarah nee Roberts and children and her brother William Henry Roberts.
1838 - (3 weeks) - Sydney NSW


Trinity House Petition

The humbe Petition of Mary Brazell, 32 years, residing at Deptford, the wife of Thomas Brazell, a Prisoner of War at Besona in France
sheweth
that your Petitioner's husband Thomas Brazill was bred tot he Sea and served there in various stations lastly as Master of the Rising Sun in the Coasting and Coal trade, and lastly in the station of Master on board the ship Rising Sun, Capt Brazell Master in the Coasting and Coal trade, and of which Mr Brazell was the owner, in which Vessel your Petitioners said Husband was captured on the Voyage from Hull to London in the month of February 1807, since which Time has has remained a Prisoner of War.
That your petitioner has 3 children
Mary Ann age 13 years
Sophia age 10 years
Elizabeth age 5 years entirely dependent on her for support.

6 day of March 1812

witnesses Jacob Brazill, Wiliam Davie, John Christmas, William White, Cruttall Pierce


From various newspapers, I have been able to establish that he captained the ships "Bee" and "Maria" before the "Rising Sun".

His brother Jacob Brazill was also a Ship Captain, taking the ship "Harlequin" to Cartagena in 1791, among others. He was also an inventor of devices for ships and became Governor of Trinity Ground in Deptford
